The Wilmington United Methodist church is very active in mission work. Over the years our members, young and old, have traveled across the country and around the world doing Christ's work. Below you'll find a sampling of our trips and mission projects.
Minister's Discretionary Fund: Currently we are fielding about 12-25 calls each day from those in the community that need help with prescriptions, gasoline, food, emergency lodging, and utility payments. As unemployment in the area increases and severance checks run out, the need is growing. To donate to this fund please make checks payable to "Wilmington UMC" and write "discretionary fund" in the notation.
Open Hands - Micro Loans Open Hands, a non-profit company organized by Pastor Dean, is in the beginning stages. The goal is to find 60 people who can donate $100 for the purpose of providing micro-loans to local folks who are trying to earn extra income. Perhaps they make crafts to sell, mow lawns, take in sewing, or have another small business idea that just needs a little capital to get started.
Medical Mission in Brazil: Each year Dr. Keith Holten and a group from the University of Cincinnati travel to the Amazon state of Brazil to provide medical care. They are currently working to equip a medical center and pharmacy in the new Ray of Hope Community Center in Brazil. Visit their web page for more information on this tremendous mission. www.amazonashopeforhealth.org Red Bird Mission Trip: Our Junior Youth Group travels to Red Bird Mission in Kentucky once each year. They collect clothing, furniture, and other items that can be sold by the mission to fund their outreach and school. Top of page Sr. Youth Group Annual Mission Trips: Our Senior High Youth Group is working hard to cover the country with mission work. They have worked on an Indian Reservation in Oklahoma, reconstruction/repair sites in New York, gutting Katrina-ravaged homes in New Orleans, and a painting project and wheel-chair ramp for homes in Bay City Michigan. Top of page Project Chacocente Mission Trip to Nicaragua: In 2008 and 2009, member of The Wilmington United Methodist Church traveled to Nicaragua to help with Project Chacocente. This is a project that helps to move families currently living inside the city dump to a home and community that they themselves help to build and cultivate. Contact Pastor Dean Feldmeyer if you would like to help support this mission. Top of page Christmas Angel Tree: Each Christmas our Jr. High Youth Group coordinates the Christmas Angel Tree program. Each year you can select an angel from the tree, shop from their wish/needs list (printed on each angel) and bring them to the church all wrapped up and labeled. The Jr. Youth will take care of the rest. If you would like to help an angel, but aren’t able to shop, just give the money to Tari Mabry and the Jr. Youth will do the leg work. Top of page Sock Drive for the Homeless: The Jr. Youth Group holds a sock drive each spring for the homeless shelter. Over the years they have collected thousands of pairs of socks to warm the feet and hearts of the homeless in our own community. Top of page Food Barrel for the Homeless Shelter: The Wilmington United Methodist church has an ongoing collection for canned food for our local homeless shelter. You’ll find the collection basket in the lower hall of the church, under the staircase. Please help us to continue to feed those less fortunate. Your Father’s Kitchen Cooking Team: On the 4th Thursday of each month we have a cooking team that plans and prepares a meal at Your Father’s Kitchen for the needy in our community. There is a collection basket in the lower hall for the food that is needed each month. Please contact the church office if you would like to help with this mission opportunity. Top of page |
